It is with deep regret I pass on the news that Myrna Smith sadly passed away on December 24, 2010 from kidney failure- she was 69 (1941-2010).
Myrna was one of the original members of the Sweet Inspirations, best known for their work with Elvis Presley & Aretha Franklin. Myrna is the second of the Sweet Inspirations to pass away in 2010. Sylvia Shemwell died on February 13.
Myrna passed approx. 1:45 PM Pacific time on December 24, 2010.
Working with Myrna and the Sweet Inspirations was truly an honour and we all will sadly miss her.
In loving memory
Mick Gerace.

Why I wanted to sing 'In the ghetto' ‘In The Ghetto’ was written over 40 years ago by Mac Davis, who
‘In The Ghetto’ was written over 40 years ago by Mac Davis, who grew up in Texas, where he witnessed poverty and ghettos in the neighborhoods he lived. This inspired Davis to write the song, originally bearing the title of ‘The Vicious Circle’, before renaming it ‘In The Ghetto’.
Davis being an Elvis fan was honoured to learn The King wanted to record the song. The Colonel - Elvis’s manager - tried to persuade Elvis not sing it as he found it to be too political. However, Elvis felt compelled to record and release the track because of its socially conscious content and of course it became a big hit.
A huge Elvis fan myself, ‘In The Ghetto’ has always been one of my favourite songs. Forty years down the track, there’s no real change, the ghettos still remain and in greater numbers. That’s what has inspired me to record this song today, albeit with a slightly more urban and gritty feel. It was important to not dilute the message that Davis wanted to send while paying homage to Elvis’s profound vocals.
I wanted to add an authentic element to the song that could connect with a new audience and reward the faithful at the same time. That element was rap, as it was born from the ghetto - I wanted the real-deal and I got that from Tone-z in NY. Tone-z understood exactly where I was coming from and the result is clearly evident from the heartfelt lyrics he produced to find the essence and reinforce the point of the song.
Having worked with The Sweet Inspirations and James Burton – ex members of Elvis’s band - in the past, I thought I’d ask them to perform on the track with me and they too could see what I wanted to achieve, so we got stuck straight into recording it. Five studios later - LA, NY and Sydney – and we have five mastered versions of ‘In the ghetto’.
It was an incredible honour for me to be performing with such world-class artists and I knew that to do justice to them, Mac Davis, The King and the profound nature of the track, I would have to sing my heart out. I went into the studio, closed my eyes and did just that.
I want a youth audience to listen to this track so that it raises their awareness of ghettos and for them to know that together we can make changes for the better. A lot of people doing small things can have a serious impact on any situation.
I hope that everyone who listens to this version understands that it’s not about me, it’s not about the originators, it’s about the message.
With respect and admiration

Dear friends,
You are a select few that know me as the guy that used to sing a lot of old Elvis songs.
Now I'm doing more of my own thing, but before I release any original work I wanted to do something special with a song made famous by The King in the late 60's. Its called "in the ghetto".
We've added original lyrics of our own, but the message of the song is as poignant today, as it was back then.
The new lyrics added to “in the ghetto” are in the form of rap, supplied by TONE-Z in NYC- a huge talent and recent Emmy award nominee.
Other performers on the track are The Sweet Inspirations providing
backing vocals and James Burton on guitar! It was truly an honour to be
able to put this together with a few of the band members that performed
with Elvis when he first released this track.
I am donating the proceeds of this track to noghettos.org. In turn noghettos.org will be giving the money to worthy organisations around the world helping empower those living in slums and ghettos.
You all have extensive connections, networks and databases and I'm calling upon you now to help me, help the world overcome poverty.
We can all help our less fortunate brothers and sisters living in poor conditions.
I hope you like what we have done with the track.
Thanks for your help...
Mick

The Sweet Inspirations were originally formed in the early sixties by Cissy Houston-Whitney Houston's mum and Dionne Warwick's auntie. As well as being Elvis's warm up band and backing singers, the girls have also sung with such greats as Wilson Picket, Aretha Franklin and Van Morrison, providing the backing vocals on Brown Eyed Girl. Stars in their own right the girls have also had numerous hits and albums of their own along the way.
The Sweet Inspirations vocals help give Mick's single 'Feeling In My Body' and the rest of the new album, a raw undeniably authentic feel.
